Mecca Masjid

Mecca Masjid is regarded as one of the seven wonders of the Hyderabad. Muhammad Quli Qutlub Shah commissioned this biggest Masjid and the conquerer Aurangazeb had been completed this Masjid. Construction began in 1694 and was taken about 77 years to be completed and the construction is supervised by Mir Faizullah Baig and Rangaiah Chowdary. Mecca Masjid is the oldest one Masjid in the Hyderabad. The Mecca Masjid is located in the Southern sector of the Hyderabad city. In 1996, it was stated as a protected monument.

The main hall of the Mecca Masjid has a height of 75 feet, width of 220 feet and length is of 180 feet. In this Masjid there is a pond flanked by slab seats. It is believed that if a person sits on one of the pond’s seats then he will surely once return to Hyderabad. In 1995, this building has given a chemical wash because the structure of this building is cracked because of lack of maintenance. In August 2001, in order to put a stop on the further damage of the Mecca Masjid, Charminar (a traffic zone), is made by the Andhra Pradesh government. On May 18, 2007 there was a bomb explosion take place at the Mecca Masjid and about 16 people were killed and 56 were seriously injure.
